When I was five my cousin Graham returned from overseas. There was great excitement in our household when we discovered he was joining us for Christmas. He had been to London, flown across the Atlantic, walked amongst the high rises of New York.

His presence at the Christmas table made it one of the best Christmas’s ever. My head spun with each tale he brought from across the water. Graham had swum in my magic sea. He had journeyed through the world that shone bright in my imagination.

Now, fifty years later, I reminisce about those times when the world felt that vibrant, when everything was new and waiting to be explored.

I still consider myself to be in 'a good place' but I can't deny that darkness lurks nearby. Old age is setting in. Moderation has replaced exuberance.

Instead of shouting, “Did you see that shooting star!” I judge it against the others I’ve witnessed. “That was a good one,” is my likely response.

My brain is so full of files, files that have been replicated many times. Few experiences get to be labelled as new and fantastic.

If all this sounds depressing and makes jumping off a cliff seem preferable to growing old, I apologise. But you can't hide from the truth. Desensitisation is inevitable with the passing of the years. The question is - what do you do about it?

For what it's worth - here's some advice I heard recently:

Have a place to go where you feel alive, like you did when you were a kid. It may be the top of a hill or a deserted beach. It may in your lounge listening to your favourite song. Or it could just involve standing out on the lawn, closing your eyes, feeling the wind caress your skin. Whatever it takes, getting a buzz out of life has to be a good idea. It's what kids do. It's why they're such happy creatures.

The special place I like to visit is down the hall, to the right. It's at my desk by the window where music and writing constantly ambush me, keeping me from doing other jobs around the house.

This website, My Magic Sea, is witness to the time I’ve spent beavering away at my desk. I hope you enjoy visiting it.

Regards,

Gavin Kennedy
